------------------------------Born in the same year as Elizabeth I of England (and the marriage of Henry VIII to her mother, Anne Boleyn), Montaigne died 11 years before her, and thus witnessed the start of the terrible Wars of Religion, which devastated south-west France (where he lived) and former Cathar lands which became Protestant as a matter of course.
